LEVEL OF DEFENSE EXPENDITURES
One of the levels that one nation measures is the level of defense expenditures, this involves all of the financial resources that are invested in the security of the nation. This is a factor that influences the commercial area in an indirect way; the percentage of economic resources that are used by one nation to invest in this area, can show a level of certain power in front of other countries, and can also show a good level in the economy, so it can be attractive for some companies to invest.
According to the “Ministerio de Defensa” has some important data about the defense expenditure level, “[…] es importante tener en cuenta que las cifras de gasto de Colombia incluyen a la Policía, mientras que las de otros países no. Esto quiere decir que si restamos el porcentaje correspondiente a la Policía, en promedio 1.2% del PIB, el gasto militar en Colombia deja de ser el más alto de la región (gráfico 2). Se ubica en un rango que coincide con el de países que han enfrentado alguna clase de amenaza interna y terrorismo durante el período analizado. […] Colombia es el cuarto país de la región en cuanto al crecimiento del gasto militar entre 1998 y 2007, después de Chile, Venezuela y Ecuador”. (MINISTERIO DE DEFENSA, p.p 14)
“Ahora bien, dado que Colombia enfrenta una amenaza interna sin par en otros países latinoamericanos, es pertinente hacer una referencia a la situación del gasto militar colombiano en relación con países que han enfrentado alguna clase de amenaza interna y terrorismo durante el período analizado”. (MINISTERIO DE DEFENSA, p.p 20)
We can see it in a graph the level of the expense in this issue.
The high levels in the years of 1996 and 1999, can be explained by the problems that Colombia faced with the internal problems of the civil armies that were being a problem in Colombia’s political and social development.
In conclusion Colombia has invested so much quantities of money in armament, and security because it has been pushed by the social problems and by trying to keep a strong image in front of all of the conflict that was raised; and this can also be beneficial for its image because in a certain point of view can show some strength and control coming from the government.
